She was presented to society in September, 1961, at the Rumson Debutante Ball and was a member of the New York Junior Assemblies. Miss Beardsley is with the press office at the White House, Washington, D.C.

She is the grand-daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John M. Ellis of Rumson and the late Mr. and Mrs. Randolph F. Beardsley of New York City.
Mr. Fahnestock attended Greenvale School and was graduated from Brooks School. He is an alumnus of Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., and is now serving in the U.S. Army.

He is the grandson of Mrs. Harold F. Hadden of Southport, Conn., and the late Mr.Hadden,and of Mrs. Wladimir von Orlik Bouimistrow of New York City and the late Snowden A. Fahnestock of Washington, D.C.

Wife Infatuated With Another Man
WASHINGTON(AP)--Asserting that his socially-prominent wife is infatuated with another man, Snowden A. Fahnestock of New York and Newport, today asked the District of Columbia Supreme court to award permanent custody of their two young children to him.
He informed the court that Mrs. Fahnestock, because of infatuation of the unnamed man, had neglected the children and is not competent to care for them.
Mrs.Fahnestock,who recently started divorce proceedings at Newport, swore out a writ in the District Supreme court yesterday accusing her husband of illegally removing their children from a train at Union station here while they were enroute from Aiken, S.C., to New York.
She said they were being kept in the Massachusetts avenue mansion of their paternal grandmother, Mrs. Gibson Fahnestock, Washington social leader.

NEW YORK(AP)--Mrs.Fahnestock, 34 years old mother of two children, was taken to a New York hospital several weeks ago for treatment of a nervous disorder. She and Snowden A. Fahnestock were divorced in October.

Hospital officials gave her permission to visit on Thanksgiving day the East 64th street home of her aunt and uncle, Mr.and Mrs. Edward Spring Knapp, who also are prominent in New York society.
At their home Tuesday night she visited a cousin, ill in bed on the third floor, and fell from the window of a nearby room a few minutes later.
Her brother, Charles Moran Jr., found her, and she was taken to the New York hospital. Her father, Charles Moran, Sr., of Newport,R.I., arrived yesterday.
Dr. Charles Cassassa said the death of Mrs.Fahnestock last night was caused by multiple fractures and internal injuries.

Mrs. Fahnestock figured in a court contest with her husband several months ago when she sought to regain custody of her children, Clara 7,and Mary Lee 6.
She said her husband had taken them from a train while it was passing through Washington en route to Aiken,S.C., and had placed them in the Washington home of his mother, Mrs. Gibson Fahnestock.
The court recently granted custody of the children to their father.
Mr.and Mrs.Fahnestock were married at Newport, R.I., June 15,1925.

NEW YORK (AP)--A fall from a third story window caused fatal injuries to the socially-prominent Mrs.Helen Moran Fahnestock, it was disclosed today as police investigated the tragic climax to her domestic troubles.

Mrs.Fahnestock, divorced seven weeks ago from Colonel Snowden Fahnestock, banker and one of the heroes of the "lost battalion," was injured Thanksgiving night. Members of the family did not report the accident to the police.
A medical examiner listed her death tonight as the result of a fall, and police concluded their investigation.

Col. Snowden Andrews Fahnestock (1886-1962), the second son
of Gibson and Carolyn Fahnestock, was listed as a resident
in 1942 - one year before the sale of the house to the
Republic of China.
Col. Fahnestock was a veteran of the two World Wars, serving
in the United States Army Reserve from 1917 to 1946. During
World War I, he was in the first Battalion, 308th Infantry,
77th Division and received the rank of major, the Purple
Heart, and the French Croix de Guerre. He served as a Colonel
in Intelligence at the Pentagon during the Second World War.
After World War I, Fahnestock was an "officer in many corporations,
and was a director of the First National Bank of
New York City until resigning in 1942 for war duty. The
bank has since merged with National City Bank." (The Evening

Col. Fahnestock married Elizabeth Bertron in 1910. After
their divorce in 1925, he married Helen Morgan Moran. Their
well-publicized divorce was granted in 1935. He was remarried
in 1936 to the former Mrs. Beatrice Beck Tuck.

(DIANE T.) MICHAELIS: How was it said that Mimi had met the President originally?
GAMAREKIAN: Well, she had graduated from—oh, dear, what is the school that Mrs.
Kennedy [Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy] graduated from? The
preparatory school? I can‘t think of the name of it. Mrs. Chapin‘s
school?
MICHAELIS: Chapin.
GAMAREKIAN: She was the editor of her school newspaper, and following the
campaign she thought it would be interesting to do an article on Mrs.
Kennedy, since Mrs. Kennedy was now in the White House and an
alumna of the school, and had written Mrs. Kennedy about the possibility of coming and
seeing her and Tish Baldrige [Letitia Baldrige] had apparently arranged for Mimi to come
down and spend some time in Washington, but Mrs. Kennedy‘s schedule was such that she
was not able to see her personally.
I don‘t know if Tish was a graduate of Mrs. Chapin‘s but at any rate, Tish saw
a good deal of Mimi and gave her a lot of background, enough material to do an article on
Mrs. Kennedy, but apparently the President did meet her on this visit. He had more time than
Mrs. Kennedy (chuckles). Barely.
And she was brought over and met the President. I don‘t know how much she saw of
him but at any rate, while she was there she also met Priscilla [Priscilla Wear] who worked in
the President‘s office and who was one of the younger girls. And I think she may have stayed
with Priscilla while she was down here for the weekend, but I don‘t know how the job came
about. Mimi‘s story was that she had had a note from Priscilla asking her if she would like to
come and work in the White House that summer and I don‘t know who suggested it or how
she ended up there, but that was how she made the original contact.
MICHAELIS: The other thing that does strike one as being rather extraordinary is
why, of all places, to be in the Press Office which would presumably be the most conspicuous place to—
GAMAREKIAN: I suppose—
MICHAELIS: —be. Inside, the White House photographer—

GAMAREKIAN:Yes and you know a girl wasn‘t in the office very long before the press
began to ask why she was there and what she was doing because Mimi
had no skills. She couldn‘t type. She couldn‘t— She was a bright girl.
She could answer the phone and she could handle messages and things but she was not really
a great asset to us.
But there was great mobility in the Press Office. Whenever the President travelled,
members of the press staff travelled as well. You always have a press secretary and a couple
of girls travelling as well as a large contingent of newspaper people and it was, I think,
easier. One of the other girls worked in our office and had been working there from the very

beginning. She made almost all of the interesting trips and the trips are normally rotated
among the girls. We all went on trips one time or another, but Mimi who obviously couldn‘t
perform any function at all made all the trips!
So it made it very easy for them to move around, although even if they worked in
another office, they still would have been able to go on trips. I don‘t know. I just think that
there was always one more desk that you could find in the Press Office, and it was a busy
office. You could almost always use another person. If you were going to use a girl who
didn‘t type or didn‘t have any skills, probably the Press Office was as good as any place
because our phones are insane. All six lines ring at the same time and if nothing else, you can
use someone just to take phone calls and look up things in the files, and cut the ticker and
that sort of thing.

And this is what Mimi did. And in another office where you would have a lot more
substantive work I just don‘t know what she would have ended up doing.

MICHAELIS: Well, just one more obvious question that probably ought to go in the
record and maybe you have answered it already. Was the President
himself aware of the rumors in the White House press corps?

GAMAREKIAN: She‘s married. Mimi‘s now married. She married a boy who graduated
from Williams College. I understand that people do want these
interviews to be candid and to discuss all aspects of the presidency and
his life and, although I don‘t know that much about this aspect, it certainly....

Fahnestock, was married yesterday to Christopher Sutton Alpaugh, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Don K. Alpaugh of Marion, Mass. The Rev. Dr. Thomas K. Tewell performed the ceremony at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York.

Mrs. Alpaugh, 28, is the merchandising manager for accessories at Tiffany & Company in New York. She graduated from Kenyon College, as did the bridegroom. Her father was a managing partner in Desai Capital Investments, an investment banking concern in New York. Her mother is an computer consultant. The bride is a stepdaughter of Andrea H. Fahnestock of Navesink, N.J.

Mr. Alpaugh, also 28, is the vice president and regional marketing director in Alexandria, Va., of Putnam Investments, a mutual fund company. His mother, Joan Alpaugh, is a saleswoman at the Braintree, Mass., store of Talbots, the women's clothing company. NAVESINK,NJ--Anthony E. Fahnestock, an investment manager in Manhattan, died on Monday at home in Navesink, N.J. He was 52 and also lived in Brooklyn. The cause was cancer, his family said.

For the last seven years Mr. Fahnestock was a partner and the senior vice president of Desai Capital Management, where he helped oversee investments in growth companies like Au Bon Pain, Loehmann's and Snapple Beverage.

Earlier he worked two years as a managing director of Donaldson Enterprises Inc., a private management company, and three years as a general partner of Coady, Fahnestock & Company, an investment banking firm.

From 1969 to 1980 he worked for Goldman, Sachs & Company, where he was a general partner and vice president of corporate finance. He began his career in 1964 at Morgan Guaranty Trust, where he became an assistant treasurer. He was also a director on the boards of 10 companies.

His marriage to the former Marion Beardsley ended in divorce.

He is survived by his mother, Valerie, of Jupiter, Fla.; his wife, the former Andrea Henderson; two daughters, Lisa, of Manhattan and Jenny, of Chicago, and a brother, Richard of Southport, Conn.

WHEATON COLLEGE--Among the elite young socialites of Wheaton College in the early 1960s, Mimi Beardsley was part of the most envied clique - the most attractive, wealthiest, brightest and most charming girls at the toney school south of Boston.

That she could sign herself out on weekends with the words that she would be traveling with ``The President of the United States'' only added to her status.

No one then imagined the truth, that the demure former White House intern, now known as Marion ``Mimi'' Fahnestock, was having an extended affair with President John F. Kennedy.

It was a secret she kept until last week, when she made the remarkable admission that she was indeed ``Mimi,'' whose story is detailed by historian Robert Dallek in his new JFK biography.

Family and friends were quick to defend her last week, saying there is no comparison to a more recent White House sex scandal.

``This is not Monica Lewinsky,'' said Mimi's aunt, Anne Ellis, who lives in the wealthy New Jersey suburbs where Mimi was raised. While Monica's gabbing was her undoing and she has capitalized on her notoriety, Mimi quietly went on with her life.

``She was a better catch for him (JFK) than Lewinsky was for Clinton,'' said classmate Susan McGunigle Linell. Mary Cleaves Guignard said, ``If you knew her, you could understand why he was attracted to her. She was lovely, well-traveled, very charming, very bright.''

But Jane Chittick noted, ``It was not common to be sleeping with someone. It was a different generation. She's not someone I considered to be fast. I would not have picked Mimi at all.''

Even her closest friends say they never suspected. ``She never said a word. Can you imagine that, in a dorm, in a women's college?'' said Kirke Dyett Huffard, a former roommate and lifelong friend. ``For 41 years, she has never said a word to anyone. It says to me that she had tremendous character.''

Huffard would say little more, except to add, ``She has no reason to bow her head.''

Mimi represented the height of society, from a wealthy New Jersey family, schooled at Miss Porter's School. At Wheaton College in Norton, Mimi was considered one of the best catches.

Mimi used her connections to get an interview with another Miss Porter alumna, Jacqueline Kennedy. That led to the White House internship, where the young socialite caught JFK's notoriously wandering eye. Dallek reports that the affair was widely known within the White House - and remarked upon by Jackie - as Mimi partied with JFK and accompanied him on trips, even as he defused the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The sexual affair began in June of 1962 and lasted until JFK's assassination in November of 1963, by Mimi's own account. She was dating her future husband, the late investment banker Anthony Fahnestock, a Williams College man, at the time. She has refused to comment on what she told her husband. She became engaged to him during the affair and married him six weeks after Kennedy's assassination, the New York Daily News reported.

The grandmother of four had two daughters with Fahnestock, who learned of their mother's tryst with history last week. At the upscale Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, where Mimi is an administrator, the Rev. J. Oscar McCloud said, ``She's the nicest person in the world. I have the utmost confidence in her.''

Wheaton classmates consider the entire affair history now. ``It really shouldn't matter,'' said Diana Walker Clymer. ``This is the spice of life . . . I just hope she writes a book. I can't wait for our reunion. I hope she comes.''
